A plethora of options are available when trying to decide which style of dance is best for your child to explore. For parents who want their children to begin dancing in a highly structured environment, ballet might be a good option. For children who just love to move and groove to different music and would enjoy exploring movement with props, a creative movement class would likely be thoroughly engaging. Hip hop, however, is an excellent form of dance for new dance students to try for many reasons.
1. It’s Exciting — Many students are excited to try hip hop dance for the first time because they know they’ll get a chance to listen to contemporary music and learn the latest dance moves that their friends and popular music artists and their dancers are currently doing. It’s fun, current, and a great conversation piece.
2. It’s A Great Way to Meet Friends — As with most dance classes, hip hop classes give students an opportunity to share in a growth experience together. In each class, students face both group and individual challenges. Throughout the development of a hip hop dance class, students may have time during class and outside of class to work together to overcome these challenges and to grow as dancers. At the end of each class or of a session of classes, there will likely be a performance where students will be given the opportunity to shine both as individuals and as members of a group.
3. It’s A Mental and Physical Workout — In their hip hop class, students will learn new dance combinations and engage various muscle groups, stimulating both their mind and body. The work of learning new dance steps, modeling movements, putting pieces of combinations together to form an entire dance piece, and memorizing whole routines will give hip hop dance students an excellent mental workout. Simultaneously, the typically high-energy movements of a hip hop dance class will aid in giving students a fantastic aerobic workout, while additionally reducing stress and giving dancers an energy boost. Sustained movements in a hip hop dance class will help students build their muscular strength as well.
